Amaco’s Velvet Underglazes are a wonderful glaze to work with – especially if you like to paint on your ceramics. They remind me of working with watercolor and acrylic paint. You do need to go over what you are painting on your ceramics about three times to ensure you get a solid color. With that said, if you do fewer coats, you can create a watercolor-like effect that can be really cool, too. Once you fire these glazes, they end up being a matte-like finish. I like this because you can glaze over the Velvet Underglazes with a clear or satin finish glaze to change the finish. They are very versatile and can help create some masterful pieces. A small jar is somewhat affordable at about $7-$10 per color. The larger container is around $30 per color. Due to having to place multiple coats, I would suggest getting the larger amount as it will last you longer.
